Driving in New South Wales: visitor essentials

If you are a temporary overseas visitor driving in New South Wales (NSW) for up to six months after arrival, you may use a current overseas driver licence. You must carry it while driving and your licence and visiting driving privileges must remain valid, without suspension, cancellation or disqualification. If the licence is not in English, you need either an English translation or an International Driving Permit (IDP). An IDP does not replace your original licence. If you live in NSW for more than six months, you must obtain an NSW driver licence. NSW has separate time limits for New Zealand licence holders, Australian citizens and permanent residents: the authority specifies up to three months for these groups. Other Australian states and territories set their own visitor-licence requirements.

Driving in Sydney and beyond

Traffic in Australia keeps to the left. Give yourself time to adjust to the steering position and vehicles approaching from an unfamiliar direction. Fasten your seat belt before moving and keep your phone out of reach while driving. Follow the speed limits shown on road signs, and plan breaks so long stretches do not become tiring. In busy city traffic, set up your route before you leave and allow time for turns and lane changes. For a trip beyond the cities, choose a realistic day’s drive with room for delays and stops.

All Sydney toll roads are cashless. You need an appropriate toll arrangement, such as an account or pass; with a rental car, you may also use the rental provider’s toll arrangement. Cash is not accepted at toll points. Before driving, understand how your rental provider handles tolls. Along with the daily rate, include possible tolls and other rental costs and extras in your budget.

If your stay includes Sydney and drives across New South Wales, plan urban traffic and longer-distance travel as different parts of the trip. Plan travel seasons and routes so that distances and stops fit your daily schedule.
