Mount Gambier apppears like a luxuriant oasis developped on the plain of an extinct volcano. In summer the Blue Lake Crater is sparkeling like sapphires. Excellent hiking and biking trails are surrounding the lake crater. Cave divers are favouring the underground caves, whereas anglers prefer the Valley Lake, Glenelg River or the Port McDonnell lakes.
Mount Gambier has three volcano craters, two of them with lakes. The origin of Blue Lake's sparkle is unknown. Actually nobody knows why the lake is sparkeling so intensively.
If you are planning a trip to the underground caves, you should ask for offered tours at the Mount Gambier Visitor Information Centre.
At Bats Bike Hire you can rent bikes for a bicycle tour.
For a very different overnight stay you can rent a cell at the former prison, which was refurbished as a hotel in 1995. Certainly there are also conventional hotels.
You can arrive by bus stopping at the Shell Blue Lake Service Station.
