Hikes with different timeframes

The Southern Prom Circuit is a three- to five-day overnight route through temperate warm rainforest to the white-sand beaches and clear waters of Sealers Cove and Waterloo Bay. The Grampians Peaks Trail is on a different scale: this one-way hike through Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park is designed to take 13 days, or 12 nights, and includes eleven hike-in campsites accessible only on foot. These timeframes help put the scale of the two routes into perspective; they are not short detours, but multi-day trip plans.

For those who prefer a route that can be completed on foot or by bike, the Goldfields Track offers a 210-kilometre trail through central Victoria, passing through historically significant places and forests. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing, meanwhile, crosses alpine ridges, green river valleys and alpine landscapes. These differences—hiking or cycling, a multi-day route or an alpine crossing—give you a concrete basis for weighing up the kind of active days you want and the travel time you plan to set aside.

In Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, walking trails and scenic drives are among the options described. MacKenzie Falls flows year-round. Elsewhere in Victoria, the Forrest Mountain Bike Trails wind through tall eucalyptus forests, dry heathland and dense fern gullies. Coast, marine life and remarkable landscapes

Diving and snorkelling are possible in Wilsons Promontory Marine National Park at Norman Beach, on the southern side of Picnic Bay and in Refuge Cove; water conditions remain variable. The protected area is characterised by diverse marine ecosystems, sponge gardens and a rich underwater world. The 12 Apostles offer a different perspective on Victoria’s coast: the rock stacks rise from the Southern Ocean. Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve sits within an extinct volcano; koalas, emus, kangaroos and numerous waterbird species live freely there.

The Otways also offer a special nature experience: visitors can observe glow-worms at Melba Gully. In the Grampians, water flows over MacKenzie Falls year-round, while the Grampians Peaks Trail, with its eleven hike-in campsites accessible only on foot, is a much longer form of hiking. Culture and food and wine as a travel focus

At Sovereign Hill, visitors can pan for real gold in the Diggings area using the same techniques miners used in the 1850s. This is one tangible way to engage with Victoria’s gold-mining history. The First Peoples exhibition at Melbourne Museum tells the story of the history, cultures, achievements and survival of First Peoples in south-eastern Australia. For those more interested in wine landscapes, the Yarra Valley has more than 70 wineries around Healesville and in the hill country of Nillumbik, Hurstbridge and Kangaroo Ground. To reach the Yarra Valley, the Lillydale railway line runs from Melbourne to Lillydale Station, while bus routes 683 and 679 run from Melbourne CBD; Lillydale Station is accessible.
