The village of Tavuki lies on the shore of Tavuki Bay. It is the chiefly village of the Tavuki Bay Community and serves as a center for traditional, church, and government activities there. Village history and cultural traditions are therefore at the forefront in Tavuki.

Chiefly Traditions and Ceremonies

Tavuki is home to the paramount chiefs of Nacolase, the traditional leaders of a confederation of 22 villages. Nacolase is the traditional Cavuti of Tavuki. The 22 villages give this leadership structure a reach that extends beyond Tavuki. At traditional events of the Tavuki Bay Community, Chief Tui Tavuki is addressed first; he also drinks the first bowl of kava (yaqona). The order of address and the first bowl of kava make the sequence at such occasions tangible.

Village Green, Foundations, and History

Historically, the chiefly houses were arranged more or less in an orderly fashion around a central village green, where ceremonies were held. Large, old earth house foundations have been preserved in Tavuki. These descriptions provide different clues about the settlement’s earlier layout: the arrangement of the houses and the role of the green as a place for ceremonies. In March 1971, the Duke of Edinburgh entered Tavuki’s village green. This makes it possible to distinguish in time between the green’s earlier use for ceremonies and this historic visit.

Church and Crafts

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Sunday afternoon service in Tavuki Bay was often held in the large church in the village of Tavuki. People from seven villages attended, and the number of visitors could reach the low hundreds. The distinction between location and participation is informative: the service was often held in Tavuki, while people from seven villages attended. Women in Tavuki weave mats, baskets, and fans. Together with chiefly traditions and religious life, these crafts add to the cultural picture of the place.

Accommodation and Getting Your Bearings

In the vicinity of Tavuki, Mereoni Vuase operated a homestay in Namuana Village, Tavuki, in April 2025 for tourists and local travelers, including government officials visiting Kadavu Island. If you are considering this accommodation, check its availability before your trip. The Tavuki Bay Community is a 10- to 15-minute boat ride from the government station in Vunisea. This information is especially relevant when choosing a location if Vunisea is also part of your plans.

Kadavu Province as the Wider Context

Beyond Tavuki, Kadavu Province offers other regional points of interest. The Great Astrolabe Reef protects the islands. Kadavu is an archipelago that includes Ono, Buliya, Yaukuve, and other islands, many of which are uninhabited. Opportunities involving manta rays are another distinct regional attraction: in Kadavu Province, some resorts give their guests the opportunity to dive and snorkel with large, gentle manta rays. This opportunity is limited to guests of the resorts concerned. The uninhabited island of Yabu lies north of Ono Island and is locally known as “Birdland” because of the many seabird species that nest there. Tavuki’s village history and the natural attractions of the wider Kadavu Province are therefore distinct points of interest to consider when planning your trip.
