Treasure Island combines marine experiences with nature conservation and Fijian culture. The island’s programme ranges from guided snorkelling tours and wildlife encounters to regular cultural activities. When looking for accommodation, it’s worth first sorting out your interests: are you most interested in observing underwater life, protecting rare species or exploring Fijian traditions? These priorities provide practical guidance without reducing the island to a single theme.

Reef Conservation and Wildlife

The reef system around Nakelo Treasure was designated a tabu area, or no-take zone, in 1996 to protect the coral reefs and the marine life that depends on them. Hawksbill turtles live and nest on Treasure Island; Treasure Island Resort has operated a conservation programme for the species for over forty years. A dedicated marine turtle rehabilitation centre opened on 7 September 2026.

The wildlife on land is also remarkable: Nakelo Treasure has a wild breeding population of the endangered Fijian crested iguana. Visitors can hand-feed resident iguanas fresh hibiscus flowers. Banded rails and Fijian shining parrots have thrived on Treasure Island since being introduced there 15 years ago; both species are considered endangered. While snorkelling around the island, you can see coral nurseries. Visitors can take part in coral planting when planting activities are held.

Snorkelling, Tours and the Sea

Guided snorkelling safaris take you into the waters around the island. Guided night snorkelling tours let you observe marine life after dark. If you want to compare water activities by duration, there are two clearly distinct options: the Reef Trolling Tour lasts two hours, while the sport fishing charter lasts four hours. Glass-bottom boat trips also run regularly, and you can feed the fish on these trips.

The experiences differ in both time of day and the duration and type of activity. When planning, you can consider whether you’d prefer guided snorkelling, observing marine life after dark or choosing a tour with a set duration. Glass-bottom boat trips add another way to explore the sea.

Fijian Culture and Shared Experiences

A Fijian Night is held weekly on Treasure Island. It includes a traditional lovo buffet and a demonstration of cooking in an earth oven. Making traditional Fijian handicrafts is also part of the evening. Treasure Island regularly offers visitors talks about traditional herbal medicine. At the Little Treasures Kids Club, children get hands-on experience with Fijian culture. Sigavou Beach Chapel is a beach wedding venue on Treasure Island.

The culinary offerings also include a bookable dining experience with private picnic baskets for a sandbank in the South Pacific. So, alongside the weekly cultural evening, there are other ways to share a meal, without tying them to a specific event time.

Getting There and Finding Accommodation

South Sea Cruises operates daily boat services from Port Denarau to Nakelo Treasure Island Resort. Nakelo Treasure Island also has its own helipad, and it is possible to arrive by seaplane.
