Volcanic Bay and hot springs

Savusavu lies on the shore of Savusavu Bay, which formed in the caldera of a volcano. The bay shapes the town’s scenic setting: here, the town and coast are directly connected. Savusavu is considered a tourism hub on the island’s south coast and is associated with a relaxed atmosphere, natural hot springs, diving and sailing, as well as a desire for peace and quiet. The destination therefore brings together a relaxing stay and experiences on the water.

One distinctive feature is right in the middle of town: Nakama Hot Springs are located in the center of Savusavu. Hot water and steam have been emerging there for centuries. The springs add a geological point of interest to a visit, without requiring you to plan your stay around a boat tour or an excursion along the coast.

Coast, bay and experiences on the water

If you want to explore Savusavu’s coast, you can go kayaking. Another option is the approximately six-kilometer route, which is mostly flat and runs from town along the road toward Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort. The distance describes a direction and route; it should not be confused with a walking time. Together, these options offer two different perspectives: the coast from the water or a route along the road.

Nawi Island Marina is also located in the sheltered waters of Savusavu Bay and is a short boat ride from Savusavu. It connects visitors with local markets, resorts and cultural experiences. This makes it another point of interest for a stay in which the bay is more than just a backdrop, shaping access to nearby excursions and encounters as well.

Pearl farming and the underwater world

At J. Hunter’s pearl farm, the tour begins with a 15-minute presentation about cultured pearls. Visitors then take a glass-bottom boat to the underwater farm, where they can see the oyster cultivation. Snorkeling is optional. The itinerary combines an introduction to pearl farming with a view of the farm in the water, so you can decide whether you are most interested in the presentation, the boat ride or the optional snorkeling.

During the 40-minute ride, visitors see pearl oysters at different stages of growth. They hang from 200-meter-long lines, three to five meters below the sea’s surface. At a cleaning platform, visitors can watch workers clean and inspect young and adult oysters. The details about the length of the lines and their depth help bring the farm to life, while watching the work at the platform offers a second look at how the oysters are cared for.

For snorkeling in Savusavu Bay, consider Split Rock, Lighthouse, David’s Point and Nuggets. The nearby Namena Marine Reserve is a separate option, accessible from Savusavu through dive operators and liveaboards. If you are planning dives, you can therefore consider this destination separately from the snorkeling spots in the bay; the two options offer different ways to experience the underwater world.
