Cycling the Motu Trails

The Motu Trails are part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail’s Great Rides and run from the coast near Ōpōtiki to Matawai through varied landscapes, nature and historic surroundings. They include the Dunes Trail. The options range from easy cycle rides or walks to more challenging mountain biking and trail running, as well as multi-day bikepacking trips between Ōpōtiki and Tairāwhiti/Gisborne. This lets you choose between a walk, an easy cycle ride, and more challenging or multi-day outings.

Historic architecture and remembrance

The Ōpōtiki Hotel is a notable example of hotel architecture in Ōpōtiki. It was built in 1904 to replace an earlier hotel that had been destroyed by fire. The former Shalfoon Brothers Shop Buildings represent a different building type: they are an unusually well-preserved example of an early 20th-century retail and commercial complex.

Agassiz House is considered one of the oldest surviving rural villas in the Waioeka Valley. Its original core is an F-plan villa dating from around the turn of the century. In collective memory, the house is associated with the killing of missionary Carl Sylvius Volkner (1819–1865) by Pai Mārire emissary Kereopa Te Rau in 1865 in Ōpōtiki District. Together, these buildings offer different points of connection for exploring the district’s architecture and history.
