Culverden brings together gardens, mountain views and the history of the Amuri region. The town was founded after the railway arrived in 1886 and later developed into the region’s railway, coaching and agricultural centre. This background provides a helpful starting point when planning your stay: should you focus on gardens, golf with a view or historical connections? The answer can also help you choose a hotel to match the character you want for your trip.

Gardens with different charms

Culverden has gardens that make for a quintessential rural New Zealand experience. One garden to explore is The Top Cottage in Culverden. Its grounds feature ponds, lawns and flower beds alongside a courtyard, a pool and raised vegetable gardens. This combination presents the garden as a sequence of distinct spaces. Sculptures created by the couple are scattered throughout the grounds. Visitors can explore the grounds and visit the studio; seasonal access may vary. Seasonal workshops are also offered, though their availability may vary.

Coldstream offers a different emphasis. The garden covers one hectare, with interconnected lawns and paths. Established roses, camellias and rhododendrons grow in large beds. Extensive plantings of daffodils, tulips and peonies shape the spring display. Unlike The Top Cottage’s ponds, courtyard and raised vegetable gardens, it is the connected lawns, paths and plantings that define the scene here.

Hemingford adds architecture and landscape to the garden theme. The property features a house built in 1952 and designed by Cecil Wood. Lissa’s studio is set in a flower-filled border. From Hemingford, the view stretches across green farmland to the Lowry Range. Architectural details, garden features and expansive landscape views offer different aspects of the place.

Golf and regional history

Culverden’s 9-hole golf course offers attractive mountain views. It is a practical way to combine a round of golf with views of the surrounding mountain landscape. The nine holes give the round a clear structure, while the outlook connects it to the landscape.

Another historical destination is near Culverden, not in the town itself: the Hurunui Hotel is regarded as a classic North Canterbury landmark. From 1868, it served as a rest stop and post station for drovers taking sheep from Nelson to Christchurch for livestock sales. This history adds a glimpse of the droving days to Culverden’s development as a railway, coaching and agricultural centre.

More experiences in the Hurunui District

In the wider Hurunui District, the Weka Pass Historic Reserve offers a distinct historical focus. It was officially established in 1969. A 40-minute track leads to a large limestone overhang featuring examples of early Māori rock art. Access to the rock art starts at the Waikari Village Walkway, with trailheads at the Star and Garter Hotel on SH7 or from Waikari. The walkway is closed during the seasonal lambing period from 1 August to 1 October.

The Hurunui District offers a variety of other landscape experiences along its trails. The short, family-friendly Woodlands Walk, at the entrance to Hanmer Forest Park, passes through forest and grassland as well as stands of Douglas firs, poplars and redwoods. The Waipara Vineyard Trail is a short, easy, well-maintained route for walkers and cyclists. It offers views of vineyards and the Waipara Valley. These regional examples differ in landscape and trail character; they are distinct attractions in the Hurunui District, not features of Culverden.
