Lake Pearson (Moana Rua) is a highland lake in the Waimakariri Basin, where the lakeshore landscape can be explored in several ways: as a habitat for crested grebes (kāmana), as a fishing spot and as a place to camp by the water. The lake is also a wildlife refuge. This combination shapes how you plan your visit: whether you’re interested in fishing, birdwatching or camping, keep the different rules and the right spot by the lake in mind.

Crested Grebes and Protected Lakeshores

Managed pasture and native lakeshore vegetation at Lake Pearson provide nesting habitat for crested grebes (kāmana). Their numbers at the lake appear to have remained stable for several decades. When in crested grebe habitat, move quietly and carefully along the shores.

Lake Pearson (Moana Rua) is designated as a wildlife refuge; this status allows activities on the lake and along its shores to be restricted. The Lake Pearson Conservation Area and the Lake Pearson (Moana Rua) Wildlife Refuge together cover 11 hectares of lakeside land at the end of the lake, as well as the lake and its shoreline.

Lake Pearson is also a Statutory Acknowledgement and Deed of Recognition site.

Fishing and Getting to the Water

Spin fishing and fly fishing are permitted at Lake Pearson, as is fishing from non-motorised watercraft such as kayaks, packrafts or inflatable rings; motorised boats are not permitted. The fishing information is current as of 1 October 2025. Check the current rules before fishing. For planning purposes, the fishing method and whether the watercraft is motorised are two separate considerations.

The lake is home to rare Mackinaw (lake trout), as well as healthy populations of brown and rainbow trout. They offer anglers a challenging experience; fish populations can change over time.

Access is spread across several points: a number of small tracks branch off State Highway 73 and lead to car parks right by the lakeshore. There is a boat ramp at the northern end for non-motorised watercraft. The lakeside car parks provide access to the lake, while the boat ramp is the place to launch watercraft.

Camping and Picnicking by the Lake

At Lake Pearson (Moana Rua) Campsite, you can camp beside a highland lake in the Waimakariri Basin. You must book a Campsite Pass online before occupying a campsite. If you have not booked online, campsite staff can make the booking for you if they are present; a NZ$10 service fee applies. Campsites may not be available. Booking procedures can change, so check the requirements before your trip.

At the head of Lake Pearson, matagouri shrubs and willow trees on the lakeshore provide a sheltered place to picnic.
