Pleasant Point combines river walks with railway history, offering different reasons to discover the area. Pleasant Point Domain is at the eastern entrance to Pleasant Point and can be reached via State Highway 8. It is used by walkers, cyclists, joggers and people walking their dogs. There is also a campground on the same domain.

Walks and River Scenery

The Pleasant Point Stream Walk takes 20 minutes; its starting point is on Halstead Road, opposite Pleasant Point Primary School. By comparison, the Opihi Walkway, associated with Pleasant Point, is a three-hour, one-way walk that approaches the town along a stretch of river. The two walks therefore differ considerably in duration.

The Opihi Walkway runs straight and flat along grassy flood-protection stopbanks. Willows line the route, with mountains visible in the distance. Fishing and swimming are popular along the stretch of river where the walkway approaches Pleasant Point. As it nears the town, the Opihi Walkway passes Parr's waterwheel at Butlers Crossing. Native birds, including fantails (Piwakawaka), can be seen on the Pleasant Point Domain Walk.

Steam Locomotives, Heritage and Golf

Pleasant Point Museum & Railway operates fully functional steam locomotives, including Ab699, built in 1922. The museum also has a Model T Ford railcar, of which only a few exist worldwide. Check current opening hours before your visit.

Opihi Rock Art is registered as a Wāhi Tūpuna/Tīpuna in Pleasant Point; the site is not open to the public. Pleasant Point Golf Club on Butlers Road has an 18-hole course. Alongside walks and railway history, these offer different themes to consider when planning your trip, while Opihi Rock Art is not a place open to public visits.

Timaru District: The Wider Setting

The wider destination of Timaru District includes rural farmland, a rugged coastline and sandy beaches. Caroline Bay is a sandy beach sheltered by the harbour breakwater; a colony of little penguins has established itself in and around the bay. Timaru District also has more than 30 walking and cycling routes suitable for all ages and fitness levels. This offers a contrast between Pleasant Point’s focus on river walks and railway history and the wider destination’s varied landscapes and routes.
