Discover the Selwyn District: Limestone, Culture and Caves
Accommodation in Selwyn District
In the Selwyn District, striking limestone formations, lava flows and a walk-through cave passage are among the regionâs defining natural features. There are also historic sites in Tai Tapu, a market selling local produce, and experiences ranging from cave walks to stargazing. When planning your trip, itâs worth first considering which of these themes you want to shape your stay.
Geology as a reason to visit
At the edge of the gorge, the Rakaia Gorge Walking Track passes through striking geological areas featuring lava flows of rhyolite, pitchstone and andesite. At Kura TÄwhiti/Castle Hill, youâll encounter a different type of rock: limestone formations shape the landscape. The area is of special significance to NgÄi Tahu and is considered a world-class destination for climbing and bouldering. Kura TÄwhiti therefore brings together geological features, cultural significance and a clear focus for climbers.
Cave Stream offers a very different perspective on the landscape: the cave is 594 metres long and lies within Cave Stream Scenic Reserve. Two short tracks lead to the entrances, and you can walk through the cave passage between them. Take care to check conditions in Cave Stream before this caving experience. Unlike the geological areas at Rakaia Gorge and the limestone formations at Kura TÄwhiti, the focus here is on the passage through the cave itself.
Culture, markets and the evening sky
St Paulâs Anglican Church and the old Tai Tapu Library were both completed in 1932. Their construction was funded largely by Sir Heaton Rhodes, who lived nearby at Otahuna. The two buildings therefore share a completion year and a historic benefactor, but offer different ways to explore the town: its church and its old library.
The Lincoln Farmerâs & Craft Market offers produce sourced entirely from the region, as well as handmade crafts. The market runs year-round; as dates can change, check them before visiting. This is especially useful if you want to plan the market into your trip rather than assume it will be on a set schedule.
At the Canterbury Astronomical Society Open Nights at RF Joyce Observatory in West Melton, the evening includes a guided tour of the night sky and telescope viewing. It begins with an introductory talk at 7:30 pm and runs until 9 pm. The Open Nights are seasonal and weather-dependent, so check the dates before you arrive. This makes the evening experience different to plan for than a visit to the geological landscapes or the market in Lincoln.
Activities and accommodation choices
From Springfield, Alpine Jet Thrills offers JetBoat and AirBoat experiences. As operators and arrangements can change, check the current offerings as you plan your trip. The two boat formats add another activity option, while climbing and bouldering at Kura TÄwhiti or walking through Cave Stream appeal to different interests.
When choosing where to stay, setting a priority like this is more useful than having a general idea of the whole region: consider whether you mainly want to plan for geological landscapes, cultural sites, a market or an experience with specific dates. For the Open Nights, factor their seasonal and weather-dependent dates into your plans; for the market, itâs worth checking the specific date.
Canterbury in a wider context
Across the wider Canterbury travel region, the landscape stretches from the Pacific coast in the east to the Southern Alps in the west; the Canterbury Plains are also among the regional highlights. Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere is also part of this wider travel region: it is New Zealandâs most important wetland habitat of its kind and provides essential habitats for numerous bird, plant and invertebrate species. This Canterbury-wide perspective extends the range of landscape experiences beyond the places described here in the Selwyn District. If your trip is to include more than one type of landscape, the coast, plains, mountains and wetland can appeal to different interests.
