Explore Patoka through its distinct routes and traces of history. An early Māori path to Taupō, a road as far as the settlement, and a nearby fortified position belong to different chapters; the Hastings District has its own nature, culture, and activity themes.

Patoka: Landscape and History

An article about Heritage Trails describes a group of trees beside Pātoka School, including Eucalyptus obliqua, Eucalyptus regnans and acacias, which provide shade on summer days. To reserve the Pātoka Community Hall, contact the Pātoka School office. Booking instructions may change, so check the process in advance.

An early Māori path to Taupō passed through the Patoka area. The Hawke’s Bay Provincial Government, established in 1859, had completed a road as far as Patoka before troops began work at the other end. In 1864, there was a palisade fortification on a hill near Patoka, occupied by the Armed Constabulary.

A later road route ran east through Esk Valley and on to Titiokura, rather than through Patoka and the gap in the Te Waka Range to Puketitiri. This distinguishes the different historical connections: the early path through the area, road construction as far as Patoka, and a later route in another direction.
