Ruakaka offers several coastal experiences: the dunes of Bream Bay, the mouth of the Ruakākā River and the Ruakaka Racecourse. Bream Bay is a 22-kilometre stretch of coastline with white sand and blue water; Ruakaka is part of it too. You can plan your trip around different experiences: a track through the dunes, wildlife watching at the river mouth or racing at the racecourse. If you’re looking for accommodation, first consider which of these aspects you’d like to shape your stay.

Dune Track and Bay

The Ruakaka Pipeline Road Track is three kilometres long and runs through the dunes to Bream Bay. It can be accessed from the car park on Mair Road, beside the oil refinery; check local conditions before setting out. The track is suitable for people of most fitness levels. As a clearly defined route, it differs from the nature activities at the river mouth, where options depend on the tides.

River and Tides

Two activities on the Ruakākā River depend on different water levels: at high tide, you can paddle upstream by kayak or stand-up paddleboard; check water conditions before setting off. At low tide, the river mouth is suitable for birdwatching. New Zealand dotterels and bar-tailed godwits breed there, although bird presence and access may vary.

Beach, Swimming and Horse Riding

Bream Bay has strong currents and rip currents; for swimming, the patrolled beach area at Ruakaka is recommended. The Ruakaka Surf Lifesaving Patrol was established in 1960 and runs regular summer patrols at Ruakaka Beach. Volunteer lifeguards patrol the beach every weekend from Labour Weekend until Easter. If swimming is part of your plans, compare this seasonal weekend period with your travel dates.

Horse riding is also subject to location-specific rules. There is a year-round horse-riding area on Ruakākā Beach between Mair Road and Karawai Street. Horse riding is prohibited at all times in the Ruakākā River and river mouth, as well as south of the river to 215 metres beyond the Ruakākā Life Saving Club.

Racecourse and Travel Planning

The Ruakaka Racecourse offers expansive ocean views and direct access to a beach where people can walk during training. Its natural all-weather track is considered one of the best of its kind in New Zealand. Nine race days are held there each season; this number may change. If a race day is important to your trip, check the racing calendar in advance.

These experiences involve different timing considerations when planning your trip: high tide matters for paddling, low tide for birdwatching, and there are also seasonal race days. If you’d like to combine several interests, you can weigh up these time windows.
