Otematata combines a distinctive townscape with a variety of outdoor activities. Preserved, originally T-shaped houses define the southern part of the town. The Otematata Wetlands, lakes near Otematata and a golf course offer different ways to spend your stay: on trails and in nature, by the water or on the golf course. You can plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most.

A townscape with a distinctive shape

Many of the original T-shaped houses have been preserved and define the townscape in the south. Their distinctive shape gives the built environment its own contours and is a striking feature of Otematata. Alongside its recreational opportunities, the town also offers an architectural impression that makes a visit memorable. If you enjoy combining scenery with local character, you can take both into account when planning your trip.

Wetlands: trails and activities

At the Otematata Wetlands, you can go for a walk, have a picnic, ride a bike and swim. The recreation area is accessible from the area north of State Highway 83. Access to campgrounds and a boat ramp is also available from there. A network of constructed, marked trails connects the Wildlife Reserve and the Boat Harbour Camp Grounds, making a loop around the town possible.

The trails give the area a distinctive sense of connection: they link the places mentioned and make it possible to walk a loop around Otematata. You can visit the wetlands for a single activity or include the trails as part of your stay. Which option you choose depends on whether you most enjoy getting active, having a picnic or spending time by the water.

Lakes, golf and the Benmore Peninsula Walk

In summer, the lakes near Otematata offer opportunities for water sports, swimming, cycling and walking. Parsons Rock Campsite lies on the shore of Lake Aviemore and offers opportunities for fishing and lakeside activities. The town also has a nine-hole golf course. This gives you activities on the water as well as another option in town, so you can vary the focus of your days.

The Benmore Peninsula Walk can be reached from Otematata via the end of the road above the Benmore hydroelectric dam. The trail passes through an exotic forest and around a peninsula that juts into Lake Benmore. If this walk is part of your plans, check the current track conditions before setting out. This will help ensure that your route planning reflects local conditions.

Find the right focus for your trip

The options mentioned differ in their nature and setting; choosing a clear focus can help you plan your trip accordingly. When selecting accommodation, consider which location suits the activities you have in mind for your stay.
