Patearoa brings together traces of the gold rush, river scenery and sweeping views across farmland to several mountain ranges. The Sowburn Walkway starts in town and forms a loop towards the foothills of the Rock and Pillar Range. There is a swimming hole on the Sowburn; fishing and golf are also activities you can enjoy during a stay in Patearoa. You can consider whether history and walking trails, water or outings into the landscape should be the focus of your trip.

Gold history on the Sowburn Walkway

The Sowburn Walkway follows a loop from Patearoa towards the foothills of the Rock and Pillar Range. Along the way, you’ll encounter several tangible traces of the area’s gold-mining history: historic gold workings and huts, old gold-mining water races, and the dwellings of early Chinese gold miners. Part of the track follows a disused water race that once supplied the town. These remnants tell different aspects of the past. The water race represents Patearoa’s former water supply; the huts, water races and dwellings bring the history of gold mining to life. Those interested in historic landscapes will find a walk where nature and the past come together.

Swimming hole, fishing and golf

There is a swimming hole on the Sowburn River in the Patearoa Water Supply Reserve. The swimming hole at Top Bridge on the Sowburn is used for swimming, picnicking and relaxing during the summer months, and is extremely popular with locals and holidaymakers. If you’re planning a swim, check current water conditions beforehand. Its seasonal use offers a different focus from the walkway’s historical highlights: here, the emphasis is on water and a break outdoors.

Patearoa is a base for anglers taking trips to the Taieri River and its extensive wetlands. This offers a further focus for outings, alongside the experiences on the Sowburn. The town also has a nine-hole golf course. This means you can take different interests into account when planning your trip, without every activity having the same character: the walkway combines exercise with gold history, the waterways are the focus when swimming or fishing, and golf offers another way to spend your stay.

Panoramic views and distinctive landscapes

From Patearoa, panoramic views stretch across farmland to Rough Ridge, Rock and Pillar, Hawkdun and Kakanui, as well as Mount St Bathans. Unlike the specific historical traces along the walkway, the view here is shaped by wide horizons and several named mountain ranges. The Patearoa Inland Saline Wetland is nearby. It is one of the rare saline areas of the Upper Taieri Scroll Plain; these ecologically rare areas are home to unique salt-tolerant plants. This landscape is a distinctive part of the area, adding unique plant life to the views of farmland and mountains.

Also nearby, above Patearoa, is Hamiltons Cemetery. The grave inscriptions offer glimpses into the difficult living conditions of the pioneering era shaped by the gold rush. Alongside traces of earlier work, they bring the human history of the region into view.

Local history at Patearoa Domain

Patearoa Domain has a full-size playing field and a pavilion with changing facilities. There is also a war memorial on the domain. Another reminder of the town’s history is a corrugated iron building from the gold-rush era, still used as a lending library. It combines historic construction with an ongoing function in the town. Together with the former water race and gold-mining traces on the walkway, it shows how different eras remain visible in Patearoa.

Choosing Patearoa as your base

Patearoa is off the Otago Central Rail Trail, but can be reached from Ranfurly and included in a round trip from Waipiata. If the Rail Trail is central to your trip, bear this location in mind when choosing your base. If, instead, you want to focus on the Sowburn Walkway, local traces of the gold rush, swimming, fishing or panoramic views, Patearoa may be an interesting starting point for your plans. When looking for a hotel or other accommodation, it helps to first decide which experiences you want to shape your trip. That way, you can choose your base to suit your actual itinerary rather than trying to force different destinations into a single focus.
