Queenstown combines lakeside scenery, viewpoints, gardens, and nature and cultural experiences. A loop track on Queenstown Hill leads to sweeping views; the Queenstown Gardens have walking paths and recreational activities beside Lake Wakatipu, while the Courthouse and TSS Earnslaw offer glimpses of other sides of local history. When choosing a hotel, consider the kind of day you want: a two- to three-hour loop track and a challenging full-day hike call for different plans than a stay by the lake or in the gardens.

Hiking: Two Timeframes, Different Views

The Queenstown Hill Time Walk is listed as a 5.4-kilometre loop track and takes two to three hours. Queenstown Hill is known to Māori as Te Tapunui, “mountain of great sacredness.” At the summit, rocky outcrops provide places to sit and 360-degree views of The Remarkables, Cecil Peak, the Frankton Arm, and Queenstown Bay. The Ben Lomond Track also offers panoramic views over Queenstown, Lake Whakatipu, and the surrounding mountain ranges; how far you can see depends on the weather.

Taking the Ben Lomond Track from Queenstown means choosing a challenging full-day hike with 1,438 metres of elevation gain. Access via the Tiki Trail starts beside the base of the Skyline Gondola at the top of Brecon Street, near the centre of Queenstown. This means choosing between two very different timeframes: a two- to three-hour loop and a full-day mountain hike. Check current track conditions before setting off; the weather, hazards, and track conditions can change.

Gardens, Lakeshore and City Views

The Queenstown Gardens are on a small peninsula on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, right beside the centre. You can stroll along the lakeshore, explore the rose garden, or play disc golf. On the side facing Marine Parade, there is a playground for tamariki; there is a skatepark on Park Street. The range of activities caters to different interests without making a hike the focus. From Queenstown Bay Beach, the view stretches across Lake Whakatipu towards Cecil Peak and Walter Peak.

Wildlife and History in Queenstown

Kiwi Park is a five-acre wildlife centre in the heart of Queenstown. At Kiwi Encounters, visitors can observe kiwis in a purpose-built nocturnal house and learn about the birds from a professional wildlife team. If you want to make this experience a firm part of your plans, check current availability in advance.

The stone Courthouse stands at the entrance to the business district, a distinctive and highly valued Queenstown landmark. Access to the building is private. Construction began in 1875 and was completed in 1876. These dates give your visit a historical context, while the Courthouse’s location at the business district marks it as an urban landmark.

TSS Earnslaw also connects Queenstown with the history of Lake Wakatipu: the ship has been part of the lake since 1912 and is one of the oldest and largest surviving coal-fired steamships in the world. On board, visitors can see the engine room with its large steam engines; a museum with historical photographs tells the ship’s eventful story. If you want to make a visit part of your plans, it’s worth checking current availability.

A Wider Look at the Queenstown Lakes District

The Queenstown Lakes District is the wider travel region and includes three main lakes: Lake Whakatipu, Lake Wānaka, and Lake Hāwea. They are used for boating, swimming, and other water sports. The Arrowtown Chinese Settlement is part of the region’s history: it is a public Category 2 historic place and the last relatively intact Chinese settlement remaining in Otago. It commemorates the Chinese presence on the Central Otago goldfields. The Lakes District Museum presents the history of Queenstown and the Southern Lakes District. Its artefacts, photographs, and films cover the region’s Māori and Chinese settlers as well as the pioneering gold rush.
