Motueka combines active days with a rich local history and natural attractions nearby. Tasman's Great Taste Trail passes through the town; the Motueka District Museum and the Saltwater Baths tell other stories of Motueka. The weekly market and café culture add a culinary dimension, while the Motueka River Delta and Motueka Sandspit appeal to nature lovers. You can choose the focus of your trip from walking and cycling, culture, food and landscape.

On the Great Taste Trail

Tasman's Great Taste Trail passes through Motueka and can be explored on foot or by bike. It is designed for cyclists and walkers and includes Grade 1, 2 and 3 sections. On its coastal section, it runs for 33 km between Māpua and Motueka and 16 km between Motueka and Kaiteriteri. The two distances make the difference between the sections clear: the route from Māpua to Motueka is longer than the one to Kaiteriteri. In the Tasman District, the Great Taste Trail is part of Nga Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trail.

Nature nearby

The Motueka River Delta can be accessed from Staples Street, north of Motueka, or from the old Motueka Wharf via the waterfront. Also north of Motueka is the internationally recognised Motueka Sandspit, an area for resident and migratory wading birds. The two places represent different natural features: a river delta on the one hand, and an area of importance to wading birds on the other. Together, they add a different perspective on the landscape to the Great Taste Trail experience.

Saltwater Baths and local history

The Motueka Saltwater Baths are New Zealand's only surviving tidal saltwater baths. Historically, the baths were a focal point for family recreation and community life for many years, including swimming, picnics, camping and fairs. This history gives the baths a social connection to local history as well as their distinctive design. The Motueka District Museum is housed in a heritage-listed building dating from 1913. Together, the baths and the museum point to two different aspects: community recreation and a historic building.

Market, café culture and activities

The Motueka Sunday Market is held every Sunday in the Decks Reserve car park. The market brings together farmers' produce, arts and crafts, and second-hand goods. Offerings include handmade specialities, freshly baked bread and artworks; there is also live music. Motueka also has a lively café culture, with a strong emphasis on good food and sustainability. This means the culinary scene extends beyond the market to include the town's cafés.
