Waikato offers many different reasons to explore: enclosed gardens, caves, a guided cultural experience, and trails for walking or mountain biking. Hamilton Gardens features 18 gardens inspired by gardens from around the world. At the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a short boat ride takes you through the glowworm grotto. Gardens as a travel focus

Hamilton Gardens comprises 18 enclosed gardens inspired by places around the world. A Highlights Tour or an audio guide offers two ways to explore the gardens; both are suitable for the whole family. The enclosed gardens are open daily from 10 am, except on Christmas Day. As opening hours may change, check the current hours before your visit. The many garden spaces make Hamilton Gardens a clear destination for anyone who enjoys discovering different garden themes while travelling.

Forest, hiking and mountain biking

At Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, the native forest is home to more than 730 native species, including kiwi and kākāpō. The Moa-Hunter experience offers a different perspective on the area: an immersive cultural journey led by a Mana Whenua guide. Nature and culture stand side by side here as distinct areas of interest.

The Over the Mountain Track follows a historic route to Pukeatua Peak and includes the Te Raki Track and the Te Tonga Track. The route runs from Hicks Road in the north to Pukeatua in the south. Allow about 5 to 6 hours for the hike; from the southern peaks, views extend across the forest and Waikato’s lush landscape.

Te Miro Mountain Bike Park has a variety of terrain and trails for active families and particularly adventurous mountain bikers. The trails are surrounded by native and planted forest.

Caves and film locations

The Waitomo cave network comprises three caves: the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave. At the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a short boat ride through the glowworm grotto is part of the experience. Ruakuri Cave is wheelchair accessible and features extensive limestone formations and crystal structures.

At Hobbiton Movie Set, a guided walking tour takes you through the 12-acre film set. The Signature Tour includes a complimentary drink at the Green Dragon Inn. So, anyone interested in the film location will find a guided tour with a specific inclusion here.

Experiences and accommodation choices

Different time commitments are available for planning your day: the Over the Mountain Track takes about 5 to 6 hours, while the boat ride through the glowworm grotto is short.
