Alexandra brings together railway and local history with nature trails. A remarkably well-preserved broad-gauge railway station, historic buildings and short loop walks in McKenzie Flora Reserve give a trip a variety of highlights. When planning, you can consider whether you are especially interested in railway heritage, the history of the town or walks among its flora and fauna.

Railway heritage on the Great Victorian Rail Trail

The Alexandra Timber Tramway and Museum is located at a remarkably well-preserved early 20th-century broad-gauge railway station. The site is where the Great Victorian Rail Trail meets the northeastern side of the township of Alexandra. The station and Rail Trail have a clear spatial connection here, making the station a distinctive feature of Alexandra’s historic character. Visitors interested in railway history will find a different focus here from that of the town’s historic buildings.

Shire Hall and tree-lined streets

Alexandra’s Shire Hall was built in 1877 and later used as a courthouse. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The tree-lined streets of Alexandra also pass the post office, classified by the National Trust, the National Bank and the court buildings. Together, these places show different aspects of the town’s history: the Shire Hall’s construction date and later use are part of the building’s story, while the streetscape draws attention to other historic institutions. This allows the railway history at the station to be linked with the town’s civic heritage, without treating the two as the same thing.

Getting your bearings at the Visitor Information Centre

The Alexandra Visitor Information Centre is located in Rotary Park. It offers barbecue shelters, toilets, showers, phone and e-bike charging facilities, as well as printed maps and local visitor information. The Alexandra – Sky High Loop starts and ends at the Visitor Information Centre, making the centre a useful point of reference for this route. If you plan to use the facilities, check what is currently available before your visit, as the listed facilities and services may change.

Short loop walks in McKenzie Flora Reserve

McKenzie Flora Reserve is on the southern side of the township of Alexandra and offers walks among its flora and fauna. There are three interconnected walking tracks, each forming a short loop of just under 2 km. The distance applies to each loop individually. These nature trails offer a different contrast to the town’s history and railway heritage: here, the surroundings themselves are the focus of the outing. Conditions in the reserve and local access may change. After weather or fire events, it is therefore advisable to check current track conditions before setting out.

When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether the historic sites or the trails in the reserve will shape your stay more.
