Altona: Beach, History and Good Food
Accommodation in Altona
Altona offers several ways to shape your trip: beach activities at Altona Beach, the history of Altona Homestead, and dining and shopping around Pier Street. If you’re planning around different interests, it helps to consider the type and timing of the activities. Some are available year-round, while others are limited to certain days or the summer months.
Altona Beach: year-round beach mats, seasonal hire
Altona Beach on the Esplanade has beach mats available year-round. They make it easier for people with different abilities to access the water. According to Hobsons Bay City Council, Altona Beach was the first beach in Australia to offer this service. The beach mats are therefore a permanent feature of the area; the claim about its national standing is attributed to the Council.
Beach wheelchair hire is a separate service: visitors can borrow them free of charge on weekends from 12 pm to 5 pm during the summer months. The two services therefore follow different schedules. If you’re planning to use the hire service, check current availability before your visit.
Altona Homestead: history and set visiting hours
Altona Homestead was built in the mid-1840s by Alfred and Sarah Langhorne. It is open Tuesdays from 11 am to 2 pm, Saturdays from 10 am to 12 pm, and on the first Sunday of each month from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. On the first Sunday, visitors can also enjoy Devonshire Tea at the Homestead, from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. This monthly opening combines a Sunday visit with the tea offering; the other visiting hours are on Tuesday and Saturday.
The visiting windows also vary in length: two hours on Saturday, three on Tuesday and four on the first Sunday. Check the current opening hours before your visit. For Devonshire Tea, also confirm the current session and booking availability.
Pier Street and the market: shopping, dining and local offerings
Pier Street is a traditional shopping strip with specialty shops, unique shopping destinations, supermarkets and local offerings. It’s also home to more than 25 cafés and restaurants overlooking Altona Beach. The number and individual businesses may change. What matters for getting your bearings is the range: you’ll find both everyday shopping options and places to eat with a view of the beach.
Altona Beach Market offers fresh produce, bric-a-brac, and local art and crafts. It takes place on Pier Street, in Weaver Reserve and in Logan Reserve; what’s on offer may vary. In contrast with the shopping strip, the focus here is on market stalls and local creations. Pier Street and the market offer different ways to experience food, shopping and creativity, without being the same kind of experience.
Choose the right pace for your stay
For planning, it’s especially useful to distinguish between year-round offerings, seasonal hire and set visiting hours. Consider whether the beach, a visit to the Homestead or the offerings on Pier Street will be the main focus of your trip. If a time-specific experience is important, plan your visit around its days and hours and confirm availability. When looking for a hotel in Altona, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay, rather than assuming that all activities follow the same schedule.
