Cape Schanck combines lighthouse history with a distinctive coastal landscape. Cape Schanck Lighthouse was built from dressed limestone and sandstone; its original mechanisms are still inside. On a guided tour, you can climb the sandstone steps to the lamp room, which is still in operation. Check current tour options before making plans. Sandstone links the building and the climb: it shapes the lighthouse’s construction material and the steps on the guided tour.

Lighthouse and Geological Coast

Several lookouts in Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve offer views of Pulpit Rock and Devils Desk. These two geological formations were created by volcanic and geological activity over millions of years. A walk to the tip of Cape Schanck leads to Pulpit Rock and dramatic basalt cliffs. Here, different perspectives come together: views of the formations and a walk leading to Pulpit Rock and the basalt cliffs. The rocks’ long history of formation adds a geological perspective to the coastal views.

Trails and Nature Watching

Along the trails near Cape Schanck, you can spot native orchids in spring. During the whale migration through Bass Strait, several lookouts at Cape Schanck offer opportunities for whale watching. This gives you a choice of two nature experiences with different conditions: flowers along the trails in spring and whale watching during the migration. If either of these experiences is important to your trip, take the relevant conditions into account when planning.

A short circuit trail leads from the car park towards Cape Schanck to the start of a wooden staircase and boardwalk that descend to the beach and rock platform. The 2.6 km Bushrangers Bay Track starts east of the car park in Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve. For planning your walk, you can compare a short circuit with a track for which a specific distance is provided.
