Chewton is a former gold-mining town in Central Victoria, whose cultural heritage includes the gold rush of the 1850s. Bushland and the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park surround the town; Box-Ironbark forests are also part of its natural heritage. This gives trip planning two main focuses: the landscape and trails on the one hand, and historic sites on the other. This way, you can discover Chewton according to the balance you want between nature and gold-mining history.

Landscape and trails around Chewton

The Forest Creek Track connects Chewton with Castlemaine and can be used by walkers and cyclists. The Leanganook Track follows Forest Creek from Castlemaine to Chewton, then continues north to Mount Alexander and on to Bendigo. Check local track conditions before setting out.

Walking times also help with planning your day. The Monster Meeting Walk is a 5.5-kilometre Grade 3 circuit and takes about two hours. The Burns Hill Walk starts at the Monster Meeting site and takes one hour. The Post Office Hill Walk also takes approximately two hours. At one hour, the Burns Hill Walk is the shorter option; the Monster Meeting Walk and Post Office Hill Walk are each designed to take about two hours.

Gold rush history and historic sites

The Monster Meeting took place at 4 pm on 15 December 1851 at Shepherd’s Hut, east of the junction of Forest Creek and Wattle Creek. A memorial monument, information panels and a replica of the Digger’s Flag mark the site. The site was added to the Victorian Heritage Register in 2017 in recognition of its significant role in the development of democracy in Victoria. Annual commemorations are also held on 15 December; event schedules may change. Check the dates before travelling.

Chewton Town Hall was built in 1858 as a general community hall. The building houses an exhibition with historical information and photographs; check current visiting hours before your visit. Chewton Post Office is listed on the state Historic Buildings Register. Next to the Town Hall, an old mobile police lockup from the 1860s is on display with an information panel, garden areas and benches. A life-size wooden sculpture of a gold miner from the 1850s is also on display at Mo's Antique Store.

A garden perspective on nature

Ellery Park offers a different perspective on nature from the tracks: its native plant garden features plants from grasslands and Box-Ironbark forests. Picnic areas, free barbecue facilities and public toilets make it a good place to take a break; check local conditions before your trip. While the trails provide a sense of direction through their routes, the garden puts the vegetation itself in the foreground.
