Clunes tells its Gold Rush story through more than individual historic buildings. The Clunes Museum, the architecture along Fraser Street and the book culture of the internationally recognised Booktown offer different perspectives. There are also recurring markets and the Booktown Festival. When planning your trip, you can choose between local history, books and events, and set your travel dates according to your main interest.

Gold Rush History at the Museum and Around Town

The Clunes Museum is housed in the former warehouse of builders Nichol and Wallace. The building dates from around 1860. The Gold Room displays artefacts relating to the discovery of gold; the Sir John Longstaff Kitchen recreates a typical kitchen from a miner’s cottage in the 19th century. The museum thus presents two perspectives side by side: the discovery of gold and a domestic space in a miner’s cottage.

A walk around Clunes also takes in specific landmarks in the town’s architectural history: the former London Chartered Bank Building, built in 1871, and the Italianate Post Office, dating from 1878. Fraser Street features particularly well-preserved Gold Rush-era architecture. Named buildings and a street with preserved architecture offer different scales for looking at the past. If you are interested in architectural styles, you can make these places a focus of your trip alongside the museum’s exhibitions.

Booktown, Festival and Bookshop

Clunes is one of only 15 internationally recognised Booktowns. The annual Clunes Booktown Festival takes place on the third weekend in March. The festival includes browsing books, book talks and meeting authors. The programme offers different highlights, whether you prefer browsing or talks and author encounters. Details may change, so confirm the latest dates and programme information before travelling.

There is also a connection to books outside the festival: the Italianate Post Office now houses a second-hand bookshop. If a visit is important to your plans, check in advance whether the bookshop is open. Together with the Booktown Festival, it makes books a theme that includes both a special event date and another connection in town.

Markets and Event Dates

The Clunes Farmers’ Market and the Clunes Makers’ Market are each held on the second Sunday of every month. The Clunes Agricultural Show is held on the third Saturday in November. This gives you several reasons to time your trip: two markets on the same monthly date and the show in November. Check the dates for each event before travelling.

If you are travelling to Clunes for the Booktown Festival, a market or the show, search for accommodation based on your planned travel dates and confirm the relevant event date in advance. If you are mainly interested in Gold Rush history or the town’s book theme, these interests can guide your decision to stay in Clunes.
