Falls Creek combines winter sports with outdoor activities in alpine terrain and insights into the region’s history. The ski resort covers 450 hectares of skiable terrain, with 90 runs accessible via 15 lifts. There are also cross-country ski trails, mountain bike routes and hikes with very different time requirements.

Skiing and Cross-Country Skiing in Falls Creek

Those interested in downhill skiing will find beginner-friendly areas in the Drovers area and on Wombats Ramble. At 2.2 kilometres, this green run is the longest of its kind in Australia. The size of the ski resort and the range of runs offer more than just a single slope to guide you. Seasonal operating conditions may vary.

Cross-country skiing offers a different way to experience the alpine surroundings: a free trail network starts at Nordic Bowl and extends into the Bogong High Plains. The Falls Creek Cross Country Centre rents cross-country ski equipment for all ages and also stocks additional accessories. This lets you choose between downhill runs and an extensive trail network when planning your winter visit. Individual offerings are subject to their own conditions.

Mountain Biking and Hiking: Different Timeframes

Falls Creek Mountain Bike Park offers 50 kilometres of gravity trails in alpine terrain high in the Victorian Alpine National Park. The trails start and finish at the resort. When planning your route, bear in mind that individual trails may be subject to seasonal conditions or closures. This makes mountain biking a distinct focus alongside winter sports, without requiring you to include a hiking route.

For a longer hike, the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing covers 37 kilometres over three days through the Alpine National Park, from Falls Creek to Mt Hotham. Check conditions and access before setting out. The nearby Wallaces Heritage Trail takes much less time: the 6.5-kilometre trail takes about 2.5 hours and starts at the Wallace Hut car park. This comparison helps distinguish a multi-day trek from a shorter outing, without treating the two routes as equivalent.

Water, Scenery and Short Explorations

One of the area’s notable landscape features is Rocky Valley Lake, at an elevation of 1,600 metres. It is considered Australia’s highest significant body of water. Kayaking is a popular form of water-based recreation in Falls Creek and offers opportunities to explore more distant shores and shorelines. Water conditions and services are seasonal. Picturesque waterfalls are also accessible from the village entrance via a short, easy walk.

Wallace’s Hut and the Falls Creek Museum

Wallace’s Hut, the oldest surviving cattlemen’s hut, is located at the start of the Wallaces Heritage Trail. The three Wallace brothers, Arthur, William and Stewart, built it in 1889. You can also learn about the area’s history at the Falls Creek Museum, where exhibits and audiovisual presentations tell the story of Falls Creek. The museum’s current opening arrangements may vary.

Consider whether you’d prefer to plan individual activities or a multi-day route, then look for hotels in Falls Creek that suit your itinerary.
