At Lake Charm, a slightly saline lake, wetlands and opportunities for active days come together. The semi-permanent lake is surrounded by agricultural land and has a sandy bottom. Its scale can be put into concrete terms: it covers 457 hectares and holds 19,940 megalitres. When planning your trip, it’s worth first deciding whether you want to focus on water activities, the wetland landscape, walking trails or events.

Lake and Wetland

Lake Charm belongs to a group of shallow natural lakes between Kerang and Swan Hill and is part of the Kerang Wetlands. The wetland system supports large populations of endemic and migratory waterbirds and provides a refuge during drought. Lake Charm is also listed as a Ramsar site. For travellers interested in landscapes and birdlife, the role of the wetland system is another distinct aspect of a visit, alongside the lake itself.

Water Activities and Fishing

Boating and water skiing are among the activities that draw visitors to Lake Charm; swimming and kayaking are other possible recreational activities. Over several years, the Victorian Fisheries Authority has stocked the lake with golden perch and Murray cod. This stocking history adds a fishing connection to the recreational appeal.

Trails and a Local Detail

There are two different walking options for exploring the area. The Lake Charm Loop Track is an easy 2.7-kilometre circuit that starts at the Lake Charm General Store and passes the Lake Charm Foreshore. Its length and route provide a clear guide for planning a loop walk. The General Store is also home to a 23-metre-long mural by Paul Oswin featuring native birds. West of Lake Charm’s South West precinct are walking trails about 2.5 kilometres long. For exploring on foot, the trails west of the South West precinct do not run along the lakeshore. The Loop Track is 2.7 kilometres long and passes the Foreshore; the western trails are about 2.5 kilometres long.

Cultural Connections and Events

Lake Charm has a close connection with the Indigenous community. A powerboat race is held here once a year. Lake Charm also regularly hosts the Victorian Ski Racing titles and the Victorian point score events. If you’re planning your trip around a particular event, check its date before travelling. The Redfin Fishing Classic draws hundreds of anglers in spring and adds a specific event to the racing calendar for visitors interested in fishing who want to plan their trip around it.

Accommodation and Trip Planning

There are two caravan parks on the shore of Lake Charm. Their location gives them a clear connection to the lake.
