Gipsy Point: Peninsula, River and Birdlife
Accommodation in Gipsy Point
Gipsy Point is a peninsula that extends into the upper lake of Mallacoota Inlet. Lakes, rivers and Croajingolong National Park shape the surrounding area. The town lies upstream from Mallacoota and about one kilometre downstream from the confluence of the Wallagaraugh River and the Genoa River. This location brings together waterways and a distinctive natural landscape.
Waterways on Mallacoota Inlet
Mallacoota Inlet is navigable from Mallacoota to Gipsy Point. Visitors can paddle a canoe up the Genoa River to Gipsy Point. The routes vary by waterway and direction: the route on the inlet runs between Mallacoota and Gipsy Point; on the Genoa River, the canoe option leads upstream to the town. These are two different waterways to consider when planning.
There is a boat ramp at Gipsy Point. Check its conditions before using it. Weather, water levels and local advice can all affect navigation, so follow local guidance when travelling on the water. Mallacoota Inlet is also known for its plentiful black bream and dusky flathead.
Bushland and wildlife watching
A walking track leads from Gipsy Point into Croajingolong National Park. There, you can spot parrots, whistlers, fantails, thornbills, sea eagles and various seabirds. Notable bird species include white-bellied sea eagles, lyrebirds and azure kingfishers; sightings naturally vary. The Point Tip Walk is an easy bushland track in the National Park near Gipsy Point. Gipsy Point is said to have 280 bird species.
Goannas and colourful Gippsland water dragons are also often seen by the lake at Gipsy Point. A large mob of kangaroos is another part of the area's natural landscape. The choice of activities offers a clear contrast: on the water, follow the inlet or the river; on foot, take an easy bushland track into the National Park, where birdwatching is possible.
Accommodation and local facilities
Gipsy Point Lodge offers Hobie kayak or canoe hire in summer. A licensed restaurant is open there on selected days; check the days in advance if you are planning to dine there. You can hire a boat with assistance from the lodge to explore Mallacoota Inlet.
The boat ramp is a facility at Gipsy Point, while hire, boat assistance and the restaurant are associated with the lodge. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider whether a seasonal water activity or a restaurant open on certain days is relevant to your plans.
