Coastal walks, wetlands and maritime history give Hobsons Bay City its distinct character. Between a nature trail at Newport Lakes, museums and the ferry connection across Port Phillip Bay, you can shape your trip around landscapes, culture or activity.

Discover Coastal Landscapes and Nature

Newport Lakes is a bushland oasis on the site of a former bluestone quarry and landfill. More than 200 plant species and 165 bird species have been recorded in the lake area. The self-guided nature trail is about 2 km long, with approximately 40 minutes suggested for the walk. This makes it possible to plan a nature visit differently from a longer route along the coast.

The Bay Trail crosses a boardwalk at the lower lake and provides access to viewpoints in Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve. Altona Coastal Park’s landscape is shaped by coastal salt marshes, mangrove habitats and mudflats, which provide habitat for resident and migratory wading birds. Walking paths through open woodland and grassland offer a different perspective. The wetlands along the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail are also home to numerous bird and other wildlife species.

Walks with Different Time Commitments

Hobsons Bay has a 40 km network of shared coastal and inland paths. The Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail is distinct from this network: the 23 km trail is designed for pedestrians and cyclists and runs along the coast between the area around the West Gate Bridge and Skeleton Creek. These distances offer a practical comparison for planning: an approximately 40-minute nature trail or a considerably longer coastal route. The trail can also be combined with waterside landscapes and wetlands, while the paths in Altona Coastal Park lead through open woodland and grassland.

Maritime History and Cultural Attractions

Maritime history is presented in different ways at several locations. HMAS Castlemaine was one of 60 Australian minesweepers built during the Second World War. The ship was converted into a museum and displays nautical exhibits and memorabilia. Seaworks Maritime Museum and Discovery Centre focuses on the history of Port Phillip Bay and the Port of Melbourne, with artefacts, models, bells and interpretive displays. Seaworks hosts events, festivals, exhibitions, music, markets and community programs throughout the year.

Other cultural attractions have their own distinct focus. Newport Railway Museum displays more than 15 Victorian Railways steam locomotives. The SUBSTATION is a multi-arts, not-for-profit centre in a 100-year-old repurposed industrial building. Williamstown Botanic Gardens officially opened in 1860 and are among Victoria’s earliest surviving botanical gardens. In Newport, the Australian Islamic Centre features 96 coloured lanterns inspired by Islamic geometry; in 2017, the centre won the Victorian Architecture Medal. Scienceworks includes the Melbourne Planetarium and immersive exhibitions.

Newport and Williamstown as Points of Reference

In Newport’s town centre, you’ll find traditional fresh food shops, a supermarket and cafés. Commonwealth Reserve is another point of reference, with the Hobsons Bay Visitor Information Centre and historic landmarks, including the Tide Gauge House and Wilkinson Drinking Fountain. To take a closer look at the area, explore Newport.

Williamstown is part of the route across Port Phillip Bay served by the St Kilda Ferry, which also includes St Kilda and Port Melbourne. If you’re planning to take the ferry, check the timetable before planning your trip. This will help you fit a waterside visit and your other destinations into your day.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Priorities

Compare specific accommodation addresses with the destinations that matter to you, and check the ferry timetable when planning your crossing. This way, your choice is based on your personal mix of coast, nature and culture rather than a general assumption about the best starting point.
