In Howqua, the Howqua Hills Historic Area combines a remote valley landscape along the Howqua River with a history shaped by gold prospecting. Nine flats, two trails with different routes and historic structures provide specific points of interest for visitors. Depending on whether you’re interested in a loop walk, the river landscape, traces of gold mining or seasonal horse riding, your stay can have a different focus.

River valley and gold-mining history

The Howqua Hills Historic Area is in a remote valley along the Howqua River and was once a place frequented by many gold prospectors. Today, the river landscape and its preserved historic landmarks are part of the area’s character. Rather than visiting just one historic site, you can discover different traces of the past on a walk while also experiencing the valley setting.

The Howqua Hills Heritage Walk is a 4-kilometre Grade 3 loop. The walk is listed as taking 1.5 hours and runs between Sheepyard Flat and Frys Flat. These details about its length, grade and duration can help you fit the loop into your day’s plans. The trail passes an old brick chimney and a smelting furnace, both built in 1884. This links the route to specific structures from the area’s gold-mining history.

Historic traces from different periods

More evidence of mining can be found at Tunnel Bend. In 1884, a 100-metre tunnel was built there to connect the Howqua River to a 4-kilometre hand-dug water race. The tunnel and water race give the history a physical dimension: their connection between the river and the water race can be traced through named structures and specific measurements.

Fry’s Hut is another historic site. Fred Fry, known as a master bushman, built his home there in the early 1940s. The chimney and smelting furnace represent structures dating from 1884, while the story of Fry’s Hut dates back to the early 1940s. Together, these places illustrate different chapters in Howqua’s history without reducing them to a single period.

The trails also differ in their described purpose. The Howqua Hills Heritage Walk is described as a loop with a specific duration and distance. The High Track provides access to numerous flats along the Howqua River and runs from the Howqua Hills Historic Area into Alpine National Park. This offers a measured loop with historic sites and a track connecting river flats with the national park as distinct points of reference.

Cultural significance and wildlife

The area’s history goes beyond gold prospecting. The Howqua Hills Historic Area is in a landscape traditionally used by the Taungurung and of cultural significance to Aboriginal Peoples. This cultural perspective is just as much a part of understanding the place as its historic structures and trails.

Wildlife can also be part of the visitor experience. Visitors may see wombats, lyrebirds, platypuses, kangaroos and wallabies in the area. The variety of wildlife shows that a stay need not be focused solely on traces of gold mining: the river landscape, wildlife watching and history offer different reasons to explore the surroundings.

Plan camping and activities

Camping on the nine flats is free. Basic facilities include pit toilets. The camping areas are accessible to two-wheel-drive vehicles, including campervans and caravans. If you’re considering an overnight stay in the area, you can factor these details about the type of camping, facilities and vehicle access into your plans.

Horse riding in the Howqua Hills Historic Area is available seasonally from November to May. This time limit is important to consider when planning a stay if horse riding is one of your preferred activities. Along with the walk, access to the river flats and opportunities for wildlife watching, it offers a range of options for different interests, without every activity having the same focus.
