Jeparit brings together the history of the Wimmera River and memories of pioneer days. Walking routes around town offer different discoveries: the river shapes the trails, while local sites, information boards and historic collections reveal other aspects of the town’s history. An outing in the surrounding area offers a different focus—from a visit to Lake Hindmarsh to the camping facilities at Four-Mile Beach.

River Trails and Walks in Jeparit

Barringgi Gadyin, the Wimmera River, flows through Jeparit. The Edward John Eyre Heritage River Walk also passes through town along the river. A sculpture celebrating exploration and information boards convey Jeparit’s connection with the river. The Jeparit Waterfront Precinct is halfway along this River Walk and provides a specific landmark on the route.

The Jeparit Heritage Walk offers another way to learn about the town’s history: this self-guided walk follows a loop through town. Signage and interpretations may change over time. The Wimmera River Discovery Trail, meanwhile, connects Dimboola with Jeparit. The routes therefore differ in scale: two walks explore Jeparit, while the trail connects the two towns. Trail conditions may vary seasonally.

Menzies and the Pioneer Days

Sir Robert Menzies is the focus at Menzies Square: the square commemorates his birthplace and life. Information boards and replicas of the original Menzies family shopfront bring this memorial site to life. The square thus adds a glimpse into another story connected with Jeparit to the river trails.

The Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum in Jeparit shows what life in the Wimmera Mallee was like in the early 1900s. Its historic collections include agricultural machinery and horse-drawn vehicles. The museum also includes original pioneer homesteads, a church, a hall, a blacksmith’s shop, a pharmacy, a state school and a gaol. The collection ranges from work equipment and vehicles to the buildings and facilities of everyday life at the time.

Lake Hindmarsh and Trip Planning

Lake Hindmarsh is close to Jeparit. When the lake is full, it is a popular spot for fishing, water skiing, swimming and canoeing; these activities therefore depend on water levels. Access to Lake Hindmarsh Lake Reserve is via the Western Highway. The reserve is 22 km north of Dimboola and directly west of Jeparit via the Nhill–Jeparit Road. The access road is suitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles.

Four-Mile Beach is also near Jeparit. It has powered sites, flush toilets, showers and a camp kitchen. This campsite offers a different kind of overnight stay from the town’s historic sites and river trails.
