Discover Kyabram
Accommodation in Kyabram
Kyabram offers a variety of ways to plan a trip: art in a gallery and on a water tank, cinema and live theatre, and an encounter with meerkats at Kyabram Fauna Park. There is also a regular 5 km run on Saturday mornings. If you want to cater to several interests within your travel group, you can shape your stay around culture, wildlife or exercise.
Art, theatre and a striking mural
Kyabram Town Hall Gallery has five exhibition spaces. The Goulburn Valley Regional Performing Arts Centre operates as the Plaza Theatre, combining cinema and live theatre today. When it opened in 1929, it served as a cinema, theatre, playhouse and dance hall. Its current dual purpose can be seen alongside its varied original uses: culture in Kyabram includes both exhibition spaces and a theatre offering cinema and live performances.
The Kyabram Water Tank Mural adds another distinctive feature. Jimmy Dvate painted the mural on the water tank, and it was completed in March 2021. Its subject is inspired by the wetlands of Kyabram Fauna Park. You can view the mural from a disused railway platform along the boundary of the water treatment plant. The artwork therefore brings together a nature theme and a specific viewing point.
Wildlife encounters and a Saturday fixture
At Kyabram Fauna Park, the Meerkat Experience gives visitors the chance to get to know meerkats up close, accompanied by animal keepers. This bookable experience has a different focus from the gallery or theatre: here, the animals and the guided encounter take centre stage. As operational details can change, it is advisable to check the latest information before planning. Hazelman's Cottage is also located in part of Kyabram Fauna Park.
Another kind of activity is parkrun on the Breen Avenue Walking Track. This free weekly 5 km event takes place every Saturday at 8 am in Kyabram. Unlike the Meerkat Experience, parkrun is a recurring event with a set distance and time. As event schedules can change, check the latest details beforehand. For planning your day, Saturday morning is therefore the key consideration, while the wildlife encounter offers a different focus.
More to explore across the wider Campaspe Shire
The wider destination of Campaspe Shire also offers a range of cultural themes. Lockington & District Living Heritage Complex is a local history museum and resource centre. Its historical exhibits include a shearing shed, a blacksmith's forge, a dairy shed and a historic classroom. Tongala has more than 30 murals in its central shopping area, as well as a walking tour of its award-winning street art. These examples have different focuses: Lockington on history and historical exhibits, and Tongala on art in the town centre.
For a longer-distance option across the wider Campaspe Shire, the 19 km Waranga Rail Trail connects Rushworth with Murchison and passes Waranga Basin, bushland and farmland. Compared with Kyabram's 5 km parkrun, the trail is defined by its length, its two endpoints and the landscapes along the route. The two activity options offer a contrast: a weekly event in Kyabram and a trail connecting two towns.
