Loch: Great Southern Rail Trail, local history and food and drink
Accommodation in Loch
Loch brings active trails, a historic streetscape and local food and drink into your travel plans. The Great Southern Rail Trail runs through the town, the main street is lined with historic buildings and cottages, and Loch Brewery & Distillery brews ales and distils spirits. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay on the trail, a village walk or tastings.
Explore the Great Southern Rail Trail
The 130-kilometre Great Southern Rail Trail runs through Loch and is suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding. This gives you three ways to experience the trail actively; its total length extends well beyond the section through Loch. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether to focus on the town itself or a longer tour on the trail.
A tunnel under the South Gippsland Highway connects the trail with Loch. A suspension bridge links it to Loch Recreation Reserve.
Village streetscape, walks and nature
Loch’s main street is lined with charming historic buildings and cottages. The Loch Village Walk offers a specific starting point for a stroll: it begins at Sunnyside Park on Victoria Road, the main street of Loch Village. You can use the historic streetscape and the walk’s named starting point to help plan your stay.
Sunnyside Park has play equipment, barbecue facilities and a skate park. There are options for a range of leisure interests; as facilities can change, check the latest information before your visit.
A suspension bridge crosses a wooded gorge in Loch Memorial Reserve. The Loch Railway Station building was formerly at Welshpool railway station. This detail adds a story about the building’s origins to the historic houses along the main street.
Tastings and events
Loch Brewery & Distillery brews ales and distils spirits in Loch. Its cellar door in Loch Village offers tastings from 11 am to 4 pm, Friday to Sunday. As opening days and hours can change, check the latest information before your visit.
The Loch Food and Wine Festival is a regular highlight among Loch’s special events. Dates and program vary. If you want to plan your stay around it, check the current festival dates before travelling.
Plan your trip and hotel choice
When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide what your trip is about: a trip focused on the trail involves different planning from a visit centred on tastings or the festival. Check dates and tasting hours before travelling, and compare the location of a specific hotel with your plans.
V/Line coach services are available for travel on the Yarram Line. Check services and timetables before your trip.
