Discover Lockington: Rail Trail, history and rally
Accommodation in Lockington
Lockington invites you to discover active trails, local history and recurring events as different aspects of a stay. The 8 km Lockington-Kotta Rail Trail, exhibits at the Lockington & District Living Heritage Complex, and events such as the Vintage & Tractor Rally provide specific starting points for planning a trip. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether activity, history or a particular event weekend is the main factor for your stay.
The Lockington-Kotta Rail Trail
The Lockington-Kotta Rail Trail is an 8 km shared-use trail in a disused railway corridor west of Lockington Road. It runs between Lockington and Kotta and offers a route for walkers, joggers and horse riders. Most sections are suitable for hybrid and gravel bikes; if you are planning to cycle, keep in mind that this applies to most sections. The trail information was last updated on 1 August 2026 and describes the trail as partially open. Check the current trail status before setting out.
Events and recreation in town
The Lockington & District Living Heritage Complex holds the Vintage & Tractor Rally annually over the ANZAC weekend. Check the dates and program before planning your trip. Several Campdraft events are also among Lockington’s recurring events throughout the year; their schedules may change. If you are travelling specifically for a rally or Campdraft, plan around a confirmed date. Event dates offer a different focus from the Rail Trail: here, the visit centres on a particular event, while there the emphasis is on choosing an activity.
Lockington also has a modular pump track with rollers, banked turns and other features. It is designed for riders and scooter users. Its intended community use includes physical activity and the involvement of young people and families. Check the current condition on site before using it. Lockington Pool is located at 5 Burns Street, Lockington.
Local history and regional perspectives
Lockington is a town in the Campaspe Shire. The Lockington & District Living Heritage Complex is a local history museum and resource centre featuring historical exhibits from the district. These include a shearing shed, a blacksmith’s shop, a dairy shed, a historic classroom, a PMG hut and a Masonic lodge. The collection also includes a restored tram, a pop-top caravan, locally built tractors and a steam car. The historical perspective therefore spans farming, crafts and education, as well as transport and technology.
In the wider destination of Campaspe Shire, the Port of Echuca offers another historic focus relating to a river port. The precinct includes the Discovery Centre, operated by Campaspe Shire Council, a museum, historic buildings and displays of equipment. There are also demonstrations and rides on authentic paddle steamers; guided tours are offered in the historic district too. The themes differ: Lockington focuses on exhibits from the district, while the Port of Echuca focuses on river ports, steam and paddle steamers.
Another regional trail option is the 19 km Waranga Rail Trail in Campaspe Shire. It connects Rushworth with Murchison and passes Waranga Basin as well as bushland and farmland. Compared with the 8 km Lockington-Kotta Rail Trail, the trails have different lengths; their endpoints and landscapes also provide distinct points of reference. Lockington-Kotta is a shared route for walkers, joggers and horse riders in a disused railway corridor, while the Waranga Rail Trail connects two different towns. Length, permitted use and route description therefore offer specific criteria to help you choose.
