Explore Milloo through two chapters of its local history: the architecture and social role of Milloo Hall, and the memory of wartime service at the former St David’s Church. The hall is in the Campaspe Shire, about 40 minutes north of Bendigo. The travel time is an approximate guide and depends on the route and conditions.

The hall, the fair and historical memory

Heritage-listed Milloo Hall is a notable example of a public hall in the interwar bungalow style. This classification draws attention to its architectural form; at the same time, the hall has local historical, social and aesthetic significance for the Campaspe Shire. Architecture and local history meet here in a tangible place. The hall’s centenary was celebrated on 11 October 2025. The date adds a clearly identified occasion from its history to its architectural significance.

Its role in community life is also part of Milloo’s history: for many years, Milloo’s annual Spring Fair was held at the hall. This long-running event tradition gives the building a social dimension alongside its architectural significance. The hall is therefore both a distinctive example of public architecture and a venue for an event that was part of local life for many years.

Another focus is the former Anglican St David’s Church in Milloo. It was rebuilt in 1919 as a memorial to those who served in the First World War. The former church closed in 2017; its history also includes an honour board bearing the names of service personnel from the First and Second World Wars. The year it was rebuilt and the honour board connect remembrance of the First World War with names from both world wars.

Milloo Cricket and Recreation Reserve is also part of the area’s history. It was reserved for cricket and other public recreation purposes. This historical purpose adds sport and community recreation to the themes of architecture and remembrance.

Milloo within the wider Campaspe Shire

If you’d like to explore cultural perspectives beyond Milloo’s local history, the wider Campaspe Shire offers a range of regional themes. The Lockington & District Living Heritage Complex is a local history museum and resource centre. Its historic exhibits include a shearing shed, a blacksmith’s shop, a historic classroom and a restored tram. In Echuca, the Port of Echuca river port precinct includes a Discovery Centre operated by Campaspe Shire Council, a museum, historic buildings and displays of equipment. It also offers demonstrations and rides on authentic paddle steamers. Together, these examples show different ways to explore regional history, from a local museum to the history of a port.

For an itinerary that includes activity and scenery, two cycling trails can be compared by their length and surroundings. The family-friendly Girgarre-Stanhope Rail Trail is 5 kilometres long and connects Girgarre with Stanhope. The Waranga Rail Trail connects Rushworth with Murchison; over its 19 kilometres, it passes Waranga Basin as well as bushland and farmland. In the Campaspe Shire, Gargarro Botanic Garden showcases native plants and reflects the dry landscapes of the Campaspe region. These trail comparisons and nature experiences complement Milloo’s focus on its hall, memorial and local history.

Your choice of search area therefore depends on the themes that interest you during your stay.
