Miners Rest connects local memory with a landscape whose history extends far beyond today’s walks. Compiled by the community, the Heritage Trail records the memories of longtime resident Bill Loader and lists specific historic sites. At Burrumbeet Creek, the Wadawurrung’s long relationship with the area and paths in Community Park are also central. This gives you two different ways to plan your trip: named heritage sites and personal memories on the one hand, and the connection between water, cultural history and walking paths on the other.

Heritage Trail: memories and place names

The Miners Rest community compiled the Heritage Trail and recorded the memories of Bill Loader, who lived in Miners Rest for many years. The project connects specific points of reference with the perspective of a longtime resident. Personal recollections give the trail a human perspective, while the entries with street names and addresses provide geographical orientation.

The entries include the Newmarket Hotel and Cobb & Co Stables at 135 Howe St, as well as Arranmore Gates at 80 Howe St. Thus, three named heritage features are associated with two addresses. Another entry on the trail is the “Former Midas Railway Station” at the corner of Midas Road and Mount Pisgah Road. The name indicates the station’s former status. The trail therefore includes addresses on Howe St as well as a precisely named street intersection.

Burrumbeet Creek and paths in Community Park

The Wadawurrung lived along Burrumbeet Creek in Miners Rest for many thousands of years. The creek provided a permanent source of flowing water, where eel and fish traps were set. This longstanding cultural connection makes the creek more than a point of reference in the landscape. When you consider the creek alongside the paths in Community Park, you encounter a much longer history of the area as well as today’s walking route.

Miners Rest Community Park has a scenic walking path along the creek bank; gravel paths run through the park beside Burrumbeet Creek. The park also has a covered barbecue area. As park facilities and amenities can change, check the latest information before visiting. The park offers a different focus from the Heritage Trail: here, paths by the water and the facilities take centre stage, while the trail focuses on memories and specifically named places.

Cultural history or time by the water?

When planning your accommodation, you can weigh up these different focuses: do you want local cultural history and specific place names to shape your stay, or would you prefer to focus on walks along Burrumbeet Creek? If you’re travelling with children, you can decide together based on your travel group’s interests. This way, your search for accommodation in Miners Rest starts with the kind of stay you want, rather than just one name from the trail.
