Moorabbin: Art, Parks and Local History
Accommodation in Moorabbin
Public art, sporting history and reserves with varied facilities give Moorabbin several specific themes to explore. If you’re looking for a hotel, considering the interests you want to pursue on your trip can help you get started: art and history, play areas or outdoor activities each offer a different focus.
Art and Local History
Horscroft Place Pocket Park is home to a mural by Mike Makatron and Damien Vick, created through Artbox. Three “Monarch” butterfly sculptures by Damian Vick add to the art at the same location. The mural and sculptures bring together two forms of public art in the park. Horscroft Place Pocket Park also has seating, tables and an open lawn.
The park provides a walking and cycling link between Moorabbin Station, Moorabbin’s shops and Moorabbin Reserve. This link is a practical point of reference for getting around on foot and by bike, while the artworks and facilities make the park itself a destination in its own right.
The area’s history can also be traced through specific names and dates. Moorabbin Oval was established in 1951 so that the Moorabbin Football Club could be admitted to the VFA the following season. Kingston City Hall opened as Moorabbin Town Hall in 1963. The historic Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ is also housed in Moorabbin Town Hall. A local history article describes it as the only one of the three Model 270s brought to Australia that is still playable.
Play, Picnics and Exercise
GR Bricker Reserve has two playgrounds and landscaped gardens. Perry Street Reserve offers different facilities: covered picnic tables and a seating area with a drinking fountain. Its renewed play area includes a shopfront element, a pipe and the Moorabbin Express, with carriages to climb on. Other play equipment and features include wooden structures with ladders, a climbing wall, two slides, a large bird’s nest swing, monkey bars, a climbing net, a sandpit and a rocker.
Moorabbin Reserve offers a different combination of facilities. New footpaths improve pedestrian access within the reserve and connect it to the surrounding streets. Linton/Perry Street Park, within Moorabbin Reserve, has a junior playground; a youth play area is in the reserve’s northern section. There is also a double picnic shelter, a barbecue and picnic tables, as well as outdoor fitness equipment. Moorabbin Reserve is also home to Moorabbin Bowling Club.
Dogs can be off leash in a designated area at Moorabbin Reserve and another on the eastern side of GR Bricker Reserve. If you’re planning to bring a dog, check the current conditions before your visit.
