Mount Macedon brings together historic gardens, trails through eucalyptus forest and a distinctive peak. There is also a memorial, a waterfall and art from the region. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the places according to their character: should the landscape take centre stage, are you particularly interested in gardens and history, or would you like to combine different experiences? The various places offer different ways to do so.

Gardens, history and art

Forest Glade Gardens is a historic private garden on the southern slopes of Mount Macedon and is almost 100 years old. Duneira Estate combines an original colonial hill station with a large garden. The estate covers 38 acres, with extensive gardens, chestnut groves, an apple orchard, original outbuildings and a gatekeeper’s lodge. Guided garden and house tours are offered at Duneira Estate by telephone booking; check the tour arrangements before your trip.

Viewfield is also a private garden, set on a ten-acre property in the centre of Mount Macedon. Its opening hours are seasonal. The size figures show a specific difference between the gardens: Duneira Estate covers 38 acres, while Viewfield covers ten acres and is in the centre of the community. This makes it possible to compare Duneira’s expansive estate character with Viewfield’s centrally located private garden.

The Gallery at Mt Macedon is run by a collective of local artists. Its range includes paintings and woodwork, as well as textiles, glasswork, ceramics, jewellery, photography, origami and mosaics. The art therefore complements a trip whose other highlights might be gardens, landscape or hiking.

Trails, peaks and nature

There are self-guided walking and horse-riding trails at Sanatorium Lake. The audio-guided Murmuring Walk is about 2.5 kilometres long and passes through tall eucalyptus forests and a damp gorge with tree ferns. The trail at Sanatorium Lake connects to the 29-kilometre Macedon Ranges Walking Trail. The two distances describe different scales: the approximate length of the named Murmuring Walk and the total length of the longer trail.

Those looking to make the views across the surrounding area their focus will find a prominent landmark at Camel’s Hump. At 1,011 metres, it is the highest peak in the Macedon Ranges and offers views of the surrounding landscape. The climb to the summit gains 500 metres in elevation and leads to an ancient rock outcrop. This experience differs from the trails at Sanatorium Lake: here, the focus is on the summit and rock formation, while there, it is on the forest, gorge and tree ferns.

Stanley Park is home to a hidden, medium-sized natural waterfall. There are also several picnic areas and a small playground. These are practical details for families planning a visit, in addition to the natural attractions; visitors can also go hiking in Memorial Cross Reserve. Options therefore range from a walk through forest and gorge scenery to a hike in the reserve or a trip to the summit.

Memorial and practical information

The Mount Macedon Memorial Cross stands at the summit, is 21 metres high and commemorates everyone who has served in wars and conflicts. The paved path to the cross is suitable for visitors with limited mobility; however, there are steps at the foot of the memorial. Keep this limitation in mind when planning to visit the cross.

Seasonal and practical arrangements also vary between the places. Viewfield’s opening hours are seasonal; check the tour arrangements in advance for guided garden and house tours at Duneira Estate. Dicksonia Rare Plants is a nursery in the centre of the Mount Macedon community. More than 2,000 different rare plants are available there; its selection and business details may change, so check them before visiting. When looking for hotels in Mount Macedon, you can first decide whether gardens and art, walking trails and summit views, or the memorial and nature should shape your trip.
