Omeo brings together clear traces of its history and trails that let you explore the town on foot or by bike from different perspectives. A short Heritage Trail, the historic Justice Precinct and an extensive range of mountain biking offer different highlights. You can tailor your trip to whether you mainly want to explore the town’s history and mining heritage or spend plenty of time on your bike.

History in the Town and Along the Trail

The Omeo Historic Museum and Justice Precinct is considered the most completely preserved known 19th-century police station and courthouse complex in Victoria. The precinct includes five heritage-listed buildings; the collection is housed in and around the Historic Park. The buildings include a police cookhouse and stables dating from 1883. The buildings and collection give your visit a tangible connection to the town’s history.

The town’s development is also highlighted along Day Avenue, the Great Alpine Road through Omeo, with information signs on both sides of the road. The Heritage Trail offers another way to explore Omeo on foot. The walking trail is 1 km long, graded at difficulty level 2, and has information signs. It is accessible from the centre of Omeo. Its length and grading provide a clear guide if you want to include a short walk in your day’s plans.

Mining history takes centre stage at Oriental Claims. The European mining company The Oriental Company worked the claims from 1876 to 1904. The trails around Oriental Claims include The Pioneers Lookout and Ah Fongs Loop. Alongside information about the town’s development and the historic complex, this gives you another historical focus to combine with walks.

Mountain Biking and Other Activities

For cyclists, Omeo Mountain Bike Park has 100 km of mountain bike trails, with 20 downhill runs for beginner to advanced riders. The park is located in Livingstone Park on Creek Street in Omeo. Facilities at Livingstone Park include a sealed pump track, toilets, barbecue facilities, a bike wash station and bike maintenance facilities.

Omeo Pump Track has 13 km of progressive trails for riders from beginner level to “Gnarly”. The information about the Mountain Bike Park and the Pump Track highlights different aspects of the cycling offer: for the park, the trail length and number of downhill runs; for the Pump Track, its length and the stated range of difficulty levels. As trail routes and facilities can change, check the latest information before setting out.

Livingstone Creek offers a different way to experience the surrounding area. It is a habitat for forest birds and is regularly visited by birdwatchers. Golf is another option: Omeo Golf Club has a nine-hole course. History, birdwatching, golf and cycling offer different themes for planning your day, without every activity needing to be the same kind of experience.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

If you’re exploring Omeo with other travellers, its different highlights can help with planning together: the precinct, the Heritage Trail and the signs along Day Avenue focus on the town’s history; Oriental Claims combines mining history with the walks mentioned; the biking options suit a trip focused more on cycling. Birdwatching at Livingstone Creek offers another distinct highlight.

When looking for a hotel in Omeo, you can first decide whether history and nature watching or cycling will play a bigger role in your stay.
