Richmond can be explored through a variety of themes: expansive parkland, views of the Yarra River, a walk with a historic focus, a mural and a market with seasonal offerings. Citizens Park and Burnley Park have distinct park profiles; McConchie Reserve provides access to the Main Yarra Trail. Together, they offer specific reasons to explore Richmond from the perspectives of recreation, the river, art or markets.

Parks and riverside trails

Citizens Park is the largest park in Richmond and one of the busiest parks in Yarra. The oval is used for various organised sports and is also a place to relax, exercise and walk dogs. Its uses therefore include both organised activities and different forms of recreation.

Burnley Park covers more than six hectares and offers views of the Yarra River. The park has a designated barbecue area and is also close to Bridge Road and Swan Street. Compared with the two parks, Citizens Park focuses on the oval and its various uses, while Burnley Park offers space, river views and a barbecue area.

McConchie Reserve is accessible to people with different abilities and provides access to the Main Yarra Trail. The trail includes a 90-minute walk along the river through Richmond. Along the way, it passes historically significant places connected with the history of Richmond and the Yarra. If you plan to use the route for navigation, check the route details beforehand. You can set aside 90 minutes for the walk; its historic stops also connect the riverside stroll with the area’s history.

Art, streets and markets

The Richmond Station Whale Mural Project was completed in early March 2013. Painting the Richmond Station Whale Mural took five days on site. Along with the mural’s subject, its completion date and the time taken to paint it provide a concrete insight into how it was created.

Victoria Street runs from Hoddle Street in the west to the Yarra River in the east. Gleadell Street Market offers seasonal fruit and vegetables, artisan breads and pastries, specialty products, fresh herbs, meat, dairy products, delicatessen items and drinks. The selection of individual vendors and products may vary, so allow for some flexibility in your choices when visiting the market.
