Discover Rokewood
Accommodation in Rokewood
Rokewood combines the history of a goldfield town with opportunities for exercise, swimming and golf. An unsealed trail, a seasonal swimming option and a long-established golf club appeal to different interests; at the same time, the town’s history and distinctive architectural forms add a cultural dimension to your stay. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the seasonal swimming option from the other activities.
Gold rush and built heritage
During the gold rush years, Rokewood developed into a civic and commercial centre that served mining communities and the surrounding pastoral properties. The Rokewood Precinct is also one of the town’s historic landmarks: it is included in a Heritage Overlay.
Rokewood Presbyterian Church displays a simple yet enduring style of 19th-century Gothic Revival architecture. Gothic Revival refers to the revival of Gothic design forms during this period. In 2021, the Rokewood & District History Board was established on Ferrars Street.
On the Kuruc-a-ruc Trail
The 13.3 km unsealed Kuruc-a-ruc Trail connects the goldfield towns of Dereel, Corindhap and Rokewood. It passes through a historic gold-mining landscape and is suitable for walkers, horse riders and cyclists of all ability levels. The trail’s length and unsealed surface are useful points of reference for planning your own trip, whatever activity you choose.
Swimming and golf
Rokewood Lagoon is a community-run, family-friendly swimming facility in the town of Rokewood. The swimming season normally starts around the third week of December and ends the following March. Seasonal operation depends on maintenance and water availability. If you want to plan your trip around swimming, check the current season information before you travel.
Rokewood Golf Club is an inclusive and welcoming club for people of all ages and abilities. It has been part of the local community for almost a century. Anyone can become a member or drop in to play golf; confirm arrangements directly with the club before you travel.
Churches and nature around Rokewood
St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Rokewood, is at the northeastern corner of the intersection of Rokewood Skipton Road (Ferrer or Ferrar’s Road) and Colac-Ballarat Road, immediately west of Kuruc-a-ruc Creek and the town of Rokewood.
Rokewood Cemetery is 1.6 km northwest of the town. It features a good example of Plains Grassland with Feather-heads, Billy Buttons and Sundews. The cemetery is of historic, social, architectural and scientific (botanical) significance to the Golden Plains Shire. These details offer nature and history enthusiasts two specific points of interest: the grassland’s distinctive plant life and the cemetery’s significance in several respects.
