Wangaratta: Discover culture and trails
Accommodation in Wangaratta
Wangaratta can be discovered from many different angles: its offerings range from textile art and local history to trails, parks and local produce. You can tailor your trip to your interests—whether that means culture, activity or exploring the outdoors together.
Culture and history with different perspectives
The Wangaratta Historical Society and Museum is housed in the historic Old Fire Station. The society preserves the nationally significant Marion Gibson Quilt. Together, the historic building and this special textile offer two different ways to explore Wangaratta’s history. The Wangaratta Art Gallery offers another focus on textiles: it is known for this across the country, and the focus developed through the Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award. The gallery presents exhibitions, events and artist-led projects across three exhibition spaces.
Holy Trinity Cathedral also offers specific points of interest for travellers interested in culture. A stained-glass window above the main entrance depicts Wangaratta’s development from an agricultural settlement into a city. The cathedral also has a historic ring of eight bells, believed to be the oldest in Australia. Two basalt war memorials stand in the Memorial Gardens. Together, these places offer different perspectives: textile art, the city’s evolution and remembrance.
Trails, parks and outdoor discoveries
The Wangaratta Shared Path Network connects the outskirts with the central business district, main roads and city parks. The parks connected to the network have toilets, parking and other facilities. The One Mile Creek Path is another clearly defined option: at 6.6 kilometres, it connects the north and south of Wangaratta.
The Bullawah Cultural Trail offers a shorter route with a different focus. It runs for 2.4 kilometres along the Ovens River and is designed as a self-guided family experience. The Bush Tucker Garden is on the trail in Apex Park. There, visitors can learn how native plants were used for food, fibre and medicine. Choosing between the routes means comparing more than just their lengths: the One Mile Creek Path is a north–south connection, while the Bullawah Cultural Trail combines a riverside setting, self-guided exploration and a specific garden theme.
In Merriwa Park, the Hidden Creature Gallery’s scavenger hunt combines an app with 30 discs on eucalyptus trees. The gallery also features augmented-reality animated creatures developed with local students. Those interested in digital discoveries will find a different kind of experience here than on the trails. The Wangaratta Pump Track, in turn, is designed for riders of all skill levels: experienced riders will find challenges, while beginners and intermediate riders have a safe place to learn.
Local produce and the right accommodation
The Wangaratta Farmers Market is held in the Holy Trinity Cathedral Gardens on Ovens Street in Wangaratta. Its stallholders sell their own locally grown, sourced and made products. This adds an insight into local producers’ offerings to the cultural and trail experiences.
