Wycheproof brings together a distinctive rocky outcrop, restored wetlands and a railway line that runs right through Broadway. There is also the Willandra Museum and Centenary Park. These different sides of the town offer a range of ways to plan a trip focused on nature, geology and local history.

Granite, Rock and Wetlands

Mount Wycheproof is a granite outcrop, or metamorphic rocky rise. It rises 43 m above the surrounding plain and is 148 m above sea level. The first figure measures its height relative to the plain, while the second gives its elevation above sea level. Together, these figures describe the landscape from two different reference points.

The walking trail at Mount Wycheproof passes tadpole ponds and rock outcrops. As local access information can change, it is advisable to check the latest details before visiting. The Mount Wycheproof Reserve is known for its unique native flora and interesting rock formations.

The focus is different at the Wycheproof Wetlands Precinct: restored wetlands support native flora and fauna, and the reserve has walking tracks. The nature experiences differ accordingly: at the Mount, rock and landforms shape the view, while at the Wetlands Precinct, the focus is on wetlands and their ecological function.

Museum and Railway History

The Willandra Museum is at the southern entrance to Wycheproof. Its historic buildings include one-room schools and the historic Ninyeunook Post Office building. The collection also includes documents and objects from the cultural and agricultural past of the Wycheproof district. Historic buildings sit alongside written and material records of the district’s history.

Wycheproof’s railway history is also visible in the layout of its streets: the railway line runs right through Broadway, the town’s main street. The historic railway station was built in 1887. There is also a turntable at the station, one of the few still operational in Victoria. The construction date, route through town and turntable reveal different aspects of railway history—from the historic station to a facility that is still operational today.

Get Active and Take a Break in the Park

The Wycheproof 5.5K Summit Dash loops around the base of Mount Wycheproof and finishes with a climb to its summit. As the event schedule may change, check the dates before your trip. The routes offer different experiences: the walking trail passes tadpole ponds and rock outcrops, while the Dash combines a loop around the base of the mountain with a climb to the summit.

Centenary Park is a good place to stop, rest and have a picnic. It has a playground, free electric barbecue facilities and toilets. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check the latest details before your visit.
