Yering between Wetland and Wine Tradition
Accommodation in Yering
Yering brings together a public wetland reserve, a history of winegrowing and culinary offerings. There are also experiences to suit a range of interests: nature and history sit alongside cheese, cider and a guided sporting activity. As you plan your trip, you can consider which topics interest you most and how you would like to spend your days.
Wetland and the history of encounters
Murrup Brarn Yarra Flats Billabong is a public wetland reserve in Yering. Its features include walking trails, interpretive signs and a small viewing platform overlooking the wetland. It is also one of the few remaining publicly managed wetlands in the central Yarra area. The Billabong is therefore both a distinct natural area and a rare publicly managed wetland in this region.
The different features offer visitors a variety of ways to explore the area: walk the trails, learn more from the interpretive signs and look out over the wetland from the small platform. This combination also makes the site appealing to travellers who want to experience nature not just as scenery, but with information and a special vantage point.
One specific wildlife sighting is subject to a particular condition: during high water, the Latham’s snipe, which comes from Japan, visits the Billabong. The link with high water is part of this description of the birdlife and is also a distinctive feature of the wetland.
The history of the place is also present. A monument at Murrup Brarn Yarra Flats Billabong marks a significant moment in the history of encounters between Aboriginal people and white settlers in the area. The history of the region is therefore reflected not only in the landscape but also in the memory of these encounters.
Winegrowing, cider and cheese
The Scottish-born Ryrie brothers first planted vines on the land at Yering in 1838. They named the land “Yering” in recognition of the region’s First Nations.
Yering Farm Wines is a small, family-run winery with its own orchard. Founded in 1989, the winery produces wine and cider; the cider is made from fruit grown in the orchard. In addition to wine, the operation is distinguished by its processing of fruit and its connection to its own orchard.
Yarra Valley Dairy offers specially curated experiences. These may include tastings, food, cheesemaking or information about artisan cheeses. Contact the dairy directly to find out which options are available for your visit; get in touch with the business to arrange an experience.
Guided activity and culinary experiences
The Melbourne Gun Club in Yering offers guided clay-target shooting sessions with safety equipment, coaching and friendly competition. The activity combines clear instruction with sporting participation. Check booking availability directly with the operator before your visit.
The two types of experience are quite different: at the Gun Club, the focus is on the guided sporting activity and competition; at Yarra Valley Dairy, culinary experiences and artisan cheese may be the main attraction. If you are planning a trip around different interests, this contrast can help you compare the offerings by the type of experience you are looking for.
