Shell beaches, tidal flats and white-sand beaches define the coast of Hauraki District. The area also offers historic trails, preserved gold mining sites and museums with regional collections. This lets you tailor your trip to different interests: nature watching, landscapes, or the history of mining and railways.

Coast and Birdwatching

Hauraki District stretches from the shell beaches near Kaiaua and Pūkorokoro/Miranda on the Firth of Thames in Tīkapa Moana (Hauraki Gulf) to the white-sand beaches of Whiritoa on the Pacific coast. At Pūkorokoro, thousands of wading birds can be seen on the shell banks and tidal flats. The state of the tide affects how visible the birds are, so take tidal conditions into account when including this natural spectacle in your plans. The coast offers a different focus from the historic sites inland.

Pastureland, Gorge and Historic Trails

The Hauraki Plains are a landscape created through land reclamation, with dairy farms and pastures. Other landscape features of the district include Karangahake Gorge and the Kaimai/Coromandel Ranges. In the gorge, the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway follows a former railway line between Paeroa and Waihi, passing remnants of the area's mining and railway history. Features of the trail include two steel truss bridges and a one-kilometre-long railway tunnel. The route gives the historic theme a tangible form: it is about both former rail connections and mining.

Gold Mining in Waikino and Waihi

Victoria Battery was built between 1897 and 1898. Preserved features include ore roasting kilns, access tunnels and a site museum in the former transformer house. Visitor offerings listed there include a tram, the museum, tours of underground kilns and a walkway above the ore kilns. Which activities are available may depend on the operating schedule; check what is currently on offer before your visit.

Waihi Gold Mine Tours also offer an insight into mining history, but with a different focus: visitors enter the area within the security fence and see the process from ore extraction and crushing through to final processing. Bookings and access may change, so it is advisable to check the current visitor arrangements in advance. This distinction can help when choosing accommodation: would you mainly like to explore historic sites and trails, or also get an insight into mining operations?

Museums and Stories from the Region

Waihi Arts Centre and Museum presents the history of the gold mining era in the Karangahake and Waihi area, from the 1880s through to the 1950s. A museum visit includes a talk, hands-on activities and time to explore the exhibitions. In Paeroa, the Paeroa & District Historical Society Museum focuses on different material, including an extensive photographic exhibition, complete issues of the Paeroa Gazette from 1896 to 1996, more than 500 pieces of Royal Albert porcelain, Māori and European artefacts, and the Dufty Shell Collection. The two museums thus offer different perspectives, from gold mining history to newspaper archives and collections.

Another story from Paeroa is told by the name Lemon and Paeroa: the drink was originally developed there using lemon juice and carbonated mineral water from Paeroa Springs. Goldfields Railway is also part of the region's railway history. Its section between Paeroa and Waihi officially opened in November 1905, with stops at Waikino, Owharoa and Karangahake.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Trip

When planning your trip, it helps to start by deciding which experiences matter most to you. Pūkorokoro is known for tide-dependent birdwatching; historic trails, mining sites and museums offer different points of interest. This lets you discover the many sides of Hauraki District without trying to fit them into a single kind of outing.
