Matamata-Piako District offers plenty of reasons to spend time outdoors or explore the past: mountain bike trails through bush and farmland, nature walks beside rivers and wetlands, as well as historic sites and art. To plan your visit, it helps to choose your main focus first. A day of cycling, a walk through a reserve and a visit to historic sites each offer different experiences.

Mountain biking between bush and farmland

Te Miro Mountain Bike Park offers more than 27 kilometres of hand-built trails through native bush, pine forest and rolling farmland in the Matamata-Piako District. This mix of landscapes is a distinctive part of the riding experience: the park combines wooded sections with open, hilly terrain. If you want to make cycling the focus of your visit, check current trail conditions before setting out, as they can change temporarily.

The Te Aroha mountain bike trail has a different layout: it is a one-way loop with additional, more challenging options. These run through bush, past waterfalls and small streams, and include fast descents. The difference is clear: at Te Miro, the focus is on more than 27 kilometres of hand-built trails across several landscapes; at Te Aroha, the loop layout and additional options shape the experience. Here, too, it is worth checking current conditions before your ride.

Bush tramway, art and history

In Waiorongomai Valley is the Piako County Tramway, New Zealand’s oldest bush tramway. Its original rails are still in place. This makes its historical significance tangible not only through its name, but also through a visible remnant. Another kind of landmark is Firth Tower: Josiah Clifton Firth had it built in 1882 as a viewing tower overlooking the surrounding landscape. Together, the two sites offer different historical perspectives—a bush tramway and a purpose-built lookout.

The Matamata-Piako District Heritage Trail connects the towns of Matamata, Te Aroha and Morrinsville, taking you to places of historical significance along the way. In Morrinsville, the Gallery adds a cultural dimension: it presents New Zealand art by local and national artists across four exhibition spaces. The Te Aroha Mineral Spas are also part of the district’s history. When they opened in 1980, they offered modern spa pools with thermal soda water.

Rivers, wetlands and forest walks

The Morrinsville River Walk links sections of Waitukaruru Stream and the Piako River. The trail also leads across a 45-metre suspension bridge to opportunities for birdwatching. Access restrictions apply to some sections; check current trail access before your visit. The Wetlands Walk offers a different natural setting: this loop trail passes through the Howarth Memorial Wetlands, a wildlife reserve.

The Hawes Bush Walk follows a short loop through a mature stand of kahikatea trees. The remaining native forest in the park is considered ecologically significant. At Neil Algar Reserve, the trail is flat and follows a gravel path. A short path leads to Mokena Geyser, which is a natural soda-water geyser. These walks vary in landscape and focus, so nature watching and a short outing need not be limited to just one kind of setting.

The Whakapipi or Bald Spur Track follows about one-third of the way up the summit trail to Whakapipi Lookout. From there, views extend over Te Aroha, the Waihou River and the wetlands. Storm damage can affect trail conditions; check current notices before setting out.

Choose the right base
